Ryedale Folk Museum is a charming and unique wedding venue located in the North York moors national park. The museum is spread across six acres of picturesque countryside, and offers a range of historic buildings and outdoor spaces for your wedding day. Whether you are looking for a Manor House wedding, a ceremony in a village shop, or fancy something completely different like an undertakers wedding, Ryedale Folk Museum has something to offer that is truly unique.
The museum is home to over 20 historic buildings, including a traditional thatched cottage, a blacksmith’s workshop and a Victorian schoolhouse. These buildings have been carefully restored to their original condition, providing a fascinating glimpse into rural life in North Yorkshire over the past 400 years. The buildings provide a unique backdrop for wedding photographs, and can be used for your wedding ceremony and receptions.
One of the most popular wedding venues at Ryedale folk museum is the 18th century thatched Pickards Cottage. Affectionately known as “White Cottage” this charming building is situated in the heart of the museum and surrounded by a beautiful garden and trees. The cottage provides a cosy and intimate space for wedding ceremonies, with space for up to 3 guests. Ideal for a truly intimate wedding ceremony.
For larger weddings, the museum’s Manor House provides a stunning backdrop for your special day. This 16th century, cruck framed building is a spacious and rustic venue, with exposed beams and a high ceiling. The Manor House can accommodate up to 58 guests and can be laid in the traditional manner with a central aisle or a less formal and intimate seating arrangement.
Another unique wedding venue at Ryedale Folk Museum is the museum’s Pavilion. This wooden clad “hut” gives a real vintage feel to your wedding ceremony and it’s also the space used for your reception should you choose to have one.
For couples looking for a more intimate wedding, Ryedale Folk Museum has plenty of options to choose from. The High Street shop and quirky Undertakers are ideal for just the wedding couple and their witnesses. Using the Iron age Roundhouse will surely take you back in time. This rustic dwelling with it’s curved walls, and natural, rural artefacts will see your guests will be seated around a open fire pit giving a truly authentic feel. The perfect setting for a hand tying ceremony.
The museum’s gardens and grounds are perfect for your wedding photographs. The museum’s orchard provides a beautiful setting, with views across the surrounding countryside. The museum’s meadow is stunning in the summer months and is surrounded by wildflowers and trees.
Bright Ravens with it’s panoramic windows let the light flood in, the addition of a charming kitchen means an ideal location for your diy wedding breakfast. Ideal for afternoon tea.
Stang End is a charismatic option for smaller groups. With its traditional thatched roof, feature fireplace and leadlight windows, this location offers a relaxed setting for your ceremony. Guests will be seated on wooden pew style benches as you say your wedding vows in this quaint and homely setting.
The village of Hutton le Hole itself it very picturesque with quaint bridges and a pretty stream running through. The North York Moors are just a 2 minute drive out of the village and a stunning backdrop for your wedding photographs.
The museum’s staff are experienced in hosting weddings and will work with you to ensure that your special day runs smoothly. The museum can provide a range of services, including catering, decorations, and wedding planning. The museum’s staff can also recommend local suppliers, such as florists, photographers and musicians.
Ryedale Folk Museum is also committed to sustainability and environmentally friendly practices and where possible uses locally sourced and organic ingredients, reducing food miles and supporting local producers.
I’ve left my favourite building until last and that, obviously, is the photographic studio. It is the oldest surviving studio of it’s kind in England and the owner, local photographer William Hayes, used it for his own wedding in 1904. How amazing a setting for your wedding day, to carry on that tradition and make your own marks on this buildings history.
